The Longevity Diet
Calorie Restriction May be the Key to Longevity
One method that’s being used to fight the signs of aging and increase longevity is calorie restriction diets. This involves severely limiting the number of calories consumed. While this theory is completely understood by the medical community, it is worth considering. A respected gerontologist, Dr. Roy Walford of the UCLA Medical, proposed the theory. While the evidence is clear that calorie restriction is helping with the fight against aging, doctors aren’t too sure exactly why it’s happening. Dr. Walford theorizes that calorie restriction will cause people to lose weight to the point of metabolic efficiency which in turn promotes optimal health.
Under Nutrition Without Malnutrition
Not only does calorie restriction extend a persons life, but it will help prevent the onset of disease as well. The thought behind this is that the anti-aging diet reduces the amount of insulin the body produces, which lowers the signs of aging. It’s well known that excess insulin production can speed the aging process.
Additionally, a reduced calorie diet will result in lower oxidative stresses on the body. Undoubtedly you’ve heard about the health benefits of antioxidants. By eating fewer calories you decrease the chances of “bad” properties from entering the body and increase the chances of antioxidants from getting in. This will help increase the body’s overall wellness.
In order for calorie restriction to be effective, you will have to work closely with a dietician to discover exactly which foods you should avoid and which ones must be included in your diet. You won’t be cutting everything out with this diet plan, but you really have to make the calories you consume count. There’s absolutely no room for empty calories. You should avoid using meal replacement solutions because these usually don’t provide the same benefits of a nutrient packed, wholesome diet. You would also benefit from eating those foods that are considered to be super foods; those with acceptable levels of calories and high nutrient levels.
If you decide that calorie restriction is something you want to implement, you should do so with the advice and help of your physician. Remember, you are not trying to cut back on how much you eat, but should take a good look at what you are eating. You aren’t trying to starve yourself by any means, but are striving to replace the high calorie, bad foods with lower calorie, nutrient packed foods.
This anti-aging, calorie restriction diet was theorized after years of longevity research and experiments with animals by Dr. Walford. In addition to following the high-low diet, he emphasized the importance of using vitamin and mineral supplements along with moderate exercise. There have been a number of follow-up studies conducted, most notably from Dr. Sonntag and Wake Forest University School of Medicine researches that indicate that calorie restriction can indeed extend the life span. This is an excellent option for people that are looking for an effective way to fight the signs of aging.
